Prof. O’Brien was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain tumour in November 2006, and his initial treatment was successful. However, Prof. O’Brien”s condition deteriorated rapidly in recent days.

Prof. O’Brien was an outstanding surgeon whose humanity and compassion for his patients would be remembered. He was a gifted clinician who combined outstanding technical skill as a surgeon with an ability to sincerely reach out to patients experiencing the dark days of serious illness.

Even before Chris was diagnosed with cancer, he had a vision to transform the Sydney Cancer Centre into an innovative, patient-focused cancer research and treatment centre. His vision will be realised when Lifehouse at RPA opens its doors in 2012.

The team at Lifehouse at RPA will carry on the vision to ensure that his legacy will truly be a lasting one and that Australians will benefit for decades to come.

Gail and family have been overwhelmed by the response from the community towards Chris throughout his long battle, and respectfully requested some privacy during this sad time.
